Dark, heavy, hard. Dry and claustrophobic rhythms against wet and primal ambiance.

Fungi networked. Eggs opened up. Now we go under.
This one is dark(er). (In this project, the structure of “taxonomy” exists. But going in less expected directions within that frame is one of the pleasures I derive from it. This tendency toward “less expected directions” seems to be part of my desire for life on Earth.)
There is stone in “Caves” and there is water in it. Those two have been arguing in the dark since long before we showed up to listen. The cave was our first home and our last hiding place. It’s where the frightened go and where the holy go. They go there, into the dark, to disappear and find themselves.
Hence the sound is both claustrophobically dry and disturbingly wet. Contradictions coexist. All is well.

Stone throat swallows light.
I crawl to the end that breathes
some other morning.
(2) Plato
Shadows on cold rock
were all the truth I trusted.
Behind me: the sun.
(3) Lascaux
Their hands made the beasts
gallop across breathing stone.
We are still in here.
(4) Moonmilk
Soft as a held breath,
the rock weeps something like pearl.
Touch it. Leave no mark.
(5) Our first home
The fire gathered us,
faces orbiting its warmth.
Darkness kept away.
(6) Burial
Petals at the mouth,
a stone heart laid in the dark.
Light waits where we leave.
(7) Hermit refuge
She sleeps below stone,
shelved books, a glow, a quiet world.
The ceiling watches.
(8) No light no color
Eyeless and too pale,
it forgot the word “color”
to live its darkness.
(9) Stalactite
Patient as a wound,
one drop at a time, it grows
its thousand-year tooth.
(10) I hear my voice
Out of the wide mouth
sound goes searching the cold walls
and comes back as me.
(11) Underworld entrance
Below, the bodies
churn and flare in scattered fire.
I look down. They climb.
(12) Swimming
The cave keeps a pool.
I float on its dark mirror,
neither sunk nor saved.
