Fungi

🍄 Fungi 🍄

Subterranean & decaying tones, reminiscent of leaves crunching on the forest floor. Cellos the color of peat. Vibraphone that lingers like spores.

The largest single organism on Earth is a fungus. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/strange-but-true-largest-organism-is-fungus/

An Armillaria ostoyae (a honey mushroom) growing in Oregon’s Blue Mountains (in the US) occupies roughly 2,384 acres (965 hectares) of soil. That’s nearly four square miles. Based on its current growth rate, it’s estimated to be between 2,400 and 8,650 years old.

It’s not a forest. It’s one creature.

It’s ancient but far from dead.

And it’s just super cool.

So, “Taxonomy of Earth” starts with “Fungi.” We speak in electrical impulses (like some fungi). We move in a network, routing, rerouting, and optimizing (also like some fungi).

The direction this project takes from here will be as interesting as the waypoints. In fact, the waypoints will gain meaning through the totality of the network itself.

Life on Earth is wonderful and wondrous. Let the journey begin.

Cheers,
Echo

(1) Spore

released without aim
the dark does not need to know
where the falling ends

(2) First light

not warmth, but older;
the soil remembers a sun
it has never seen

(3) Mycelium

white threads in the black
the forest thinks in circles
no one hears it think

(4) The network

signal without voice
a hunger passed root to root
kindness or just need

(5) Fruiting body

the body arrives
sudden, whole, uncalled specter;
already leaving

(6) Bioluminescence

no one asked the dark
to hold light (and yet, and yet)
the dark holds the light

(7) Symbiont

I have taken root
in something that lets me live;
call it what you want

(8) Decomposer

tenderness, this too:
to sit with what has fallen
until it becomes

(9) Toxin

what the body wants
and what will end the body
dressed in the same red

(10) Sticky, lively

spore finds bark finds wet
not quite love, but close enough
that is how it starts

(11) Dormancy

I have put myself
somewhere safe inside myself;
come find me in spring

(12) Return

everything I was
is still here, now, rearranged;
call it beginning
